Hydrogenic City Herten

Herten pits on Hydrogen

The greatest challenge the energy revolution presents is transporting and storing renewable energy. One possible way of meeting this challenge is to store energy in hydrogen and to recover the energy using fuel cells. For the last 135 years, energy has been a dominating topic at Herten -at one time as Europe's largest coal mining town and today as one of the most key sites for hydrogen and fuel cell technology. Producing so-called 'green hydrogen' by using wind powered electrolysis is also pioneering technology.

What was a vision in 2000 has today become a reality. Over the past few years, numerous companies and institutions who are keen supporters of renewable energy, particularly in the hydrogen and fuel cell technology industry, have settled on the old Ewald collieries. Together they are forming the Herten Hydrogen Centre of Excellence. The vision was developed around a particular site profile. Production, transport or applications - Herten is promoting this future industry by promoting a whole supply chain.

Herten has hit the road.
